Not all pupils who experience PMLD will require or be entitled to receive all these forms of support all the time. It may not be appropriate to treat elements such as these in the same way as the subjects of the curriculum, but time devoted to pastoral, paramedical and therapeutic provision should be seen as offering many important opportunities for learning. Carlton (1993) suggests that ‘all therapies have a common core in aiming to develop communication skills, including attention, anticipation, turn taking, and to promote enjoyment’.

Most mainstream schools will have very limited access to the range of pastoral, paramedical and therapeutic provision as identified above, but such provision remains an important element of the curriculum for pupils with learning difficulties and will need to be sourced either from local special school or LEA resources.
